Dan Simmons - Phases Of Gravity Synopsis: Richard Baedecker is a former astronaut with a distinguished career, which is now in his past. His aerospace job is unsatisfying, and his family relationships have suffered during his career. Getting along in years, he finally faces the fact that he is restless and in need of something more. He journeys out into the country, with intentions to look up some of his former astronaut friends. A tragedy with one of them brings him back to life, and awakens feelings he forgot he had. This is a very quiet, sometimes moving book, which manages to be effective without being sappy. Dave, another former astronaut, is a colorful and likeable character, who also seems to struggle for a sense of purpose after he and Baedecker have walked on the moon together. Simmons has another outstanding book here, to add to an always growing list of memorable ones.
